The Cabot Panthers opened the last fall camp of coach Mike Malham with 103 players.

That includes 23 seniors, 38 juniors and 42 sophomores.

Malham announced his retirement earlier this summer. The 2018 season will be his 38th year as Panthers head coach.

“The first day was a pretty good day,” Malham said. “Everybody showed up that we thought would. They all worked pretty good. We brought the varsity in and worked them for about three hours then we brought in the sophomores for about 2 1/2 to three hours.”

Malham said he’s not thinking about this being his last season.

“It was just business as usually, getting ready for the season,” he said. “Hopefully, we didn’t take any steps backward since spring ball. Obviously, kids are kids. They are going to forget some stuff. We’re just trying to get back to where we were in the spring the next couple of days. Hopefully, we’ll get better from there.

“I like what we’ve got out there working. It was one of the better springs we’ve had. There were no bad attitudes. Everyone was working hard. I’m looking forward to this year and I think we’ve got a chance to be pretty decent.”

Cabot will scrimmage at Lake Hamilton against the Wolves and the Hope Bobcats on Aug. 21.

The Panthers will open the season Aug. 31 at home against the Pine Bluff Zebras. They play at El Dorado on Sept. 7 and at Benton on Sept. 14 before hosting Little Rock Catholic in the 7A-Central opener Sept. 21.
