Cabot’s Jacob Hudson didn’t give Southside any opportunities to get a second shot Tuesday night. And by the time the Mavericks’ shots quit falling, Hudson and the Panthers had themselves a 30-point victory. “He was very active tonight,” Cabot coach Chris Meske said. “By our unofficial stats, he had 20 (points) and 18 (rebounds) tonight. I’m glad we brought him tonight.” Cabot (14-1, 2-0) trailed by as many as five in the first half, and by one (31-30) at the half. But the third quarter and beyond wasn’t close. The Panthers held the Mavericks to just 11 second half points. “The first half, I didn’t think we got off the bus very well,” Meske said. “We’re playing virtually with no seniors and no experience. Every time we do something, it’s a first for these guys. This is our first conference road win.” The Panthers’ Jackson Muse finished with 21 points in the win, and Cabot was 5-of-13 from the 3-point line. The Mavericks hit a wall. The team was 1-of-15 from the field in the fourth quarter and just 3-of-21 from the floor in the second half. Yet, after Tyrese Solomon hit a jumper from the free throw line, Southside led 33-32 in the third quarter. Then, it all went south. Cabot ended the quarter on a 19-4 run. And, even after Meske was hit with a technical foul with 2:03 left in the third quarter, the Panthers kept scoring. “We didn’t get off the bus very well, but we responded extremely well in the second half defensively,” Meske said. “We gave up 31 in the first (half), and we gave up 11 in the second. Defensively, we stepped it up and got some easy buckets in transition.” Dalton Thomas led the Mavericks (5-10, 0-2) with eight points. Cabot 61, Southside 27 GIRLS — Cabot’s Izzy Arnold scored seven of her game-high 14 points in the third quarter as the Panthers beat Southside, 61-27, in 6A-Central play. Cabot (11-2, 2-0) led 12-0 after one quarter and 24-0 with 4:27 left in the first half. Southside trailed by as many as 33 (39-6) in the first half, but closed to within 29 (46-17) on the strength of a 9-5 scoring run midway through the third quarter. Erin Graham led the Mavericks (0-13, 0-2) with nine points.
